The Heart Connection

Periodontal disease is directly linked to atherosclerosis, endocarditis, and stroke. The bacteria that thrive in diseased gums enter the bloodstream, triggering inflammatory responses that damage arterial walls. Studies published in the Journal of Periodontology confirm that patients with chronic gum disease are 20% more likely to develop heart disease. Regular periodontal care isn't just dental hygiene — it's cardiac prevention

The evidence is overwhelming. Oral health does not exist separately...it is the gateway connection to systemic wellness, mental resilience, social agency, longevity, and more!

The Cognitive Connection

Groundbreaking research from the National Institute on Aging reveals that Porphyromonas gingivalis — the bacterium responsible for chronic periodontitis — has been found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients. Adults with chronic gum disease face a 65% higher risk of developing dementia. Your oral microbiome is a direct pathway to cognitive health, making dental care one of the most accessible forms of neuroprotection available.

The Self-Esteem Factor

The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry reports that 73% of adults believe an unattractive smile can hurt career prospects. But the damage goes deeper: dental shame is linked to social withdrawal, depression, and anxiety disorders. For millions of Americans, the inability to smile freely creates an invisible cage of self-consciousness that impacts every human interaction, from job interviews to first dates.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), gum disease (Periodontal Disease) is considered one of the most prevalent infectious diseases globally, affecting a significant portion of the adult population world wide. Periodontal disease was considered a co-morbidity factor during Covid-19. Patients with gum disease had a dramatically increased risk of hospitalization and a substantial increase risk of death when they contracted the Covid virus.

Patients with severe respiratory problems or even pneumonia during the cold and flu season are at a much greater risk of hospitalization and have an increased risk of death if they have gum infection. Most hospitals now require patients needing surgical procedure to follow "dental clearance" (treating oral infection) prior to elective procedures because of the increased risk of adverse outcomes. Untreated gum disease is a serious health risk and is associated with an increase risk of many severe disease processes, including heart disease, strokes, diabetes, Alzheimer's, low birth-weight babies, and more.

In the US approximately 70% of adults over the age of 40 years have some degree of periodontal infection. Gum disease should be considered a serious health risk. Unfortunately, during the Covid-19 epidemic dentistry was considered "non-essential" and dental offices were forced to close.
